Ballast Program

Thousands of tones of ballasts have ended up in our landfills. But since 1980 all ballasts are required to be PCB free. This was the result of scientific findings that the materials used to make ballasts were a factor in causing cancer and polluting our earth

Although Ballasts now are PCB free, there has never been a safe means to recycle them – until now. We are working with a recycling company that will ensure the proper steps are taken so all current ballasts are recycled. Please do your part. Bring us your unwanted ballasts, and we will ensure that not another ballast ends up in our landfill.

We are pleased to announce that for every pound of ballasts we receive, we will donate one cent to a local charity in Edmonton.

Westinghouse Canada

Ballasts produced after 1978 are non-PCB ballasts. Westinghouse only produced ballasts until the early 1970s. After the '70s, General Electric (CGA) manufactured the ballasts for Westinghouse and the CGA date coding system applies.

Sola Canada

A date code will be on the ballast as a number followed by a year (i.e. A76). This would show this has been produced in Jan (A) in 1976 (76). Any date code labeled A80 or later does not contain PCBs.

Philips Lighting

All ballasts produced after 1979 are non PCB. There will be a three or four-digit code stamped on it. First digit (or two) represents the month and the last digits represent year. All ballasts should be marked on the label as "No PCBs" with or without the code.

Holophane Canada Inc.

Only ballasts manufactured after 1980 are PCB free. A year of production date should be shown on the ballast.

General Electric (CGA)

If the final letter on the ballast is a N or A, then is probably contains PCBs. If the final letter is a E or combination of E1 or ER the ballast is free of PCBs. If the final letter is T, it is possible it does contain PCBs. All ballasts after March 1978 contain no PCBs. If a date code is stamped on the back, anything after 8703 (year and month) is a non-PCB ballast.

Allanson Division

The ballast is marked with two letters - the first letter represents the year and the second letter is the month. Letter A represents 1969 with letter Q being omitted. Any ballasts with coding AM or higher do not contain PCBs. All numeric coding are PCB free as well.
